Community Corner: You Decide Denver w/ Jason Vitello & Sam Ciaravola

SugaBear & La Molly spoke with Public Health Strategist Jason Vitello, & Program Specialist – Community Health Promotions Division, Sam Ciaravola from Denver Health to discuss the You Decide Denver participatory budgeting initiative, led by Denver’s Health’s Center for Addiction Medicine. This initiative empowers community members and community-based organizations to propose, vote on, and implement new non-clinical programs to support individuals with substance use support and recovery.

Through private philanthropy and partnership with the Participatory Budgeting Project, YDD has allocated $100,000 to be dispersed directly to non-clinical community-led project ideas that meet people where they are with information, education, screening, and support options to help them on their recovery journeys.

Jason & Sam shared data on the substance use, addiction, and overdose crisis in Denver, and why we need to center public health and community driven solutions (over the drug war/cops, courts, and cages approach). They also discussed how our listeners & community can vote on the ideas submitted by Denver residents.
