Put You On | Durand Bernarr

An extreme lover of music and all that it encompasses, Jason “SugaBear” Harris has been a fixture in the music/radio community for over 22 yrs

R&B is having a moment. The genre has never been more expansive, more adventurous, or more willing to interrogate its own conventions. But even within that fertile landscape, Durand Bernarr occupies a singular position. He is an artist who can move between razor-sharp funk and delicate soul, between rapped verses and stratospheric falsetto, between headline-grabbing performances and deeply interior songwriting, without ever losing the thread of who he is. Let me Put You On.

Born Bernarr Durand Ferebee Jr. in Cleveland, Ohio, Bernarr grew up surrounded by music at every turn. His mother was a vocal coach and music director. His father was an audio engineer who worked with Jay-Z, Beyonce, Whitney Houston, and Rihanna. By 16, he was on the road with Earth, Wind and Fire as a production assistant. The foundation was serious from day one.

He is also openly queer, and that identity informs his artistry without ever flattening it into a single narrative. His music speaks to anyone who has ever felt too much, too loudly, in a world that keeps asking you to turn it down. In a genre historically built on emotional honesty, Bernarr holds nothing back.

His 2024 project, En Route, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album. Then in 2026, BLOOM went all the way and took home the Grammy. Now, hot on its heels, BERNARR. dropped May 1 via Create Music Group. Named as a tribute to his father, Bernarr Ferebee Sr., the album celebrates family legacy and musical lineage. Billboard described it as expanding his soulful, gospel-informed soundscape with touches of yacht rock, P-Funk, house, and Miami bass. Durand Bernarr sings, raps, produces, and DJs. He is also one of the most electric live performers working today. His 2023 NPR Tiny Desk Concert is required viewing.

With a Grammy on his mantle and BERNARR. freshly in the world, this feels less like a victory lap and more like the start of a whole new race. The fanbase that has followed him since those early YouTube covers has always known what the mainstream is only beginning to understand: Durand Bernarr is one of the most gifted and genuinely thrilling artists of his generation.
